AGLC allowing electronic raffles for charities

Alberta Gaming, Liquor & Cannabis (AGLC) is allowing online sales of 50/50 tickets to adults within Alberta available to Albertans who attend an event and those who do not. More than $170 million was raised in the 2018-2019 year through 14,000 raffle licences.

AGLC says the online sales option is available for large 50/50 raffles, increasing Alberta’s charitable organizations’s proceeds to benefit Alberta programs and services.

“The opportunity for organizations to offer online 50/50 ticket sales is a terrific step forward for Alberta’s charities. Adult Albertans in all corners of the province will now get a chance to support causes that are important to them from the ease of their smartphones and laptops,” said AGLC President and CEO Alain Maisonneuve in a media release.

AGLC is also reducing how much must be raised before a random number generator can be used. Previously, provincial charities needed to hit $1 million in raffle sales to use one. That amount has been lowered to $100,000.
